Bold vs. Subtle: A Design Dilemma in Card Game Creation Creating a card game is a lot more than just coming up with fun rules. It's about the entire experience, and that includes the visual design of the cards. Recently, while working on my game "High & Low - Card Game", I found myself agonizing over one seemingly small detail: the design of the number ten. One of the key cards in the deck is, of course, the ten. It's a high value, and I wanted it to stand out. However, I quickly realized that there were many ways to make it stand out. The image above shows two of the options I was considering. On the left, you see a ten with a bold, almost explosive design. The numbers are thick and impactful, giving the card a sense of power. On the right, the ten is more subtle, with a thinner frame and a slightly more refined look. Ultimately, I decided to go with a design that was even thinner than the one on the right.
